Essential Oils for the Scalp
The most popular essential oil used for the scalp are: rosemary, thyme, sage, and basil. All four of them have a strong wooden scent that appears to be unpleasant to many people. Many people use lemon and tea tree oil for oily scalp. Other oils used on the scalp are eucalyptus and peppermint. The purpose of using essential oil on the scalp is mainly to stimulate the blood circulation and the follicles of the scalp to regenerate a stronger growth of the hair. When essential oil is used on the scalp, it must be diluted with a base oil (I’m referring to a 100% pure essential oil in this case). If you put the essential oil right on to your scalp, you may feel that your scalp is heated up and start burning. Especially when using the peppermint oil, it must be diluted before putting on skin or scalp. Peppermint oil is a very strong and spicy oil, it can create too much stimulation to the skin and harm the skin.
The most popular base oil used for the scalp is: jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is a well-known oil for the skin and hair. Some jojoba oil is in golden form, called the golden jojoba oil. Jojoba oil can also be found in organic forms. It is popular because it is easy for the skin to absorb compare to many other base oils. Another one that is commonly used is the coconut oil. It is rather a greasy oil. People use to warm up coconut oil and massage it into the scalp. Another well-known one is olive oil.
Essential oils are commonly used for hair and scalp. There are many scalp oil out there that claims to stimulate the growth of hair, in which 90% of them contains essential oil. If you want, you can simply make it yourself. What you need is go out there and get a bottle of essential oil of your choice (you can have more than 1, but no more than 4 as recommended from a book i read last yr), and get some jojoba oil. I personally recommend that you mix the oil each time you do a oil massage. But if you like it handy, you can buy a tinned bottle and just pour both oils in and mix and you’ll be ready each time you want a massage. For 15mL base oil, you would want to add 6-15 drops of your choice of essential oil.
My personal experience:
It is recommended that you do a scalp massage 2 to 3 times a week, but it is hard to keep up. Also, once you put the oil on, everyone in the house can smell your head and not everyone loves the smell of the oils. I’ve try wash my hair afterwards, and the smell would still be there but will not be as strong. I’ve try leave it on overnight, but it didn’t feel comfortable. Whichever way you like, it is recommended that you leave the oil on the scalp for at least 30 minutes. For people who doens’t like the strong wooden smell of these essential oils i mentioned above, you can try using jojoba oil or other vegetable oils. Just heat up the oil abit and start massaging. If you like, add a drop of lavendar oil for relaxation.
Try searching on the internet about essential oils for hair and scalp and you will find alot of different information and recipes. Yet, my experience tells me that the most useful method is the most simplest one. I have provided above the simplest and basic way to start the treatment.
